Carol Morrow honored for Cub Scout service

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — “Fun” and “rewarding” are just two of the ways Cubmaster Carol Morrow of Pack 76 in Bay Minette describes her more than 20 years of service with the Cub Scouts.

The Heritage Junior Womens Club honored Morrow for her long-time service with the Cub Scouts by presenting her with the Lyn Stuart Community Service Award at its end-of-year banquet.

“This person is someone who doesn’t just talk the talk, she walks the walk,” said Tina Covington, who presented the award.

The HJWC Lyn Stuart Community Service Award was created in 2000 to honor Stuart, a former member and past president, and to also recognize an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the community.

Morrow, a native of Bay Minette, first got involved in Cub Scouting in 1987 when her son Brett Morrow, now an Eagle Scout, signed up as a Tiger Cub, the first rank in Cub Scouting. She followed Brett through Cub Scouting, serving as a leader for each of his dens — Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos — finally becoming Cubmaster in 1991, his fourth-grade year.

“As long as Ive got any say in it, we will have a Cub Scout group in Bay Minette,” Morrow said. “That’s why I’ve stayed in it for so long. Its important for the kids and I have a lot of fun, I enjoy it, I really do.”

She attended an Eagle awards ceremony recently for Campbell Noonan of Bay Minette, a former member of Cub Scout Pack 76 and a current member of Boy Scout Troop 78 of Bay Minette. The Eagle Scout badge is the highest rank a boy Scout can achieve.

“With Campbell getting his Eagle,  I had a small part,” she said. “I was his leader way back when. If there’s some way we can help a child achieve any of his potential then that is what counts, not whether my house is clean.”

The First United Methodist Church Men’s Club chartered Cub Scout Pack 76 of Bay Minette in 1986. Morrow took over the position of Cubmaster from Norman Cale when he transferred to Scoutmaster of the local Boy Scout Troop. The Bay Minette Cub Scouts are part of the Baldwin district of the Mobile Area Council.

Morrow’s activities with Cub Scouts extend to the Baldwin district and the Mobile Area Council. She has served as the district training director; a member of the training team; Cub Family Weekend director; Baloo; Powwow and commissioner.

In 2004, she completed her Wood Badge, which is advanced training for scout leaders. She has been recognized for her work with Cub Scouts by the Mobile Area Council winning both the District Award of Merit in 1996 and the Silver Beaver Award, a national award for service to youth, in 2000.

Morrow said she believes Cub Scouting is important to the community because it provides a wide variety of experiences for the boys and exposes them to so many different things. Cub Scouts do not emphasize winning as the end result, she said, quoting from a leaders manual, but the more difficult task of doing your best.

Some of the activities in which Cub Scouts in Pack 76 participate include scouting for food, conservation projects, Christmas Fest and Kids Day parades, family camping, the Pinewood Derby, Raingutter Regatta and Baldwin District Day Camp.

Morrow said she would like to see Cub Scout Pack 76 continue to grow and include more boys.

“To do that we have to have parents willing to bring the kids,” she said.

Morrow is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bay Minette and the Bay Minette Civic Club. She has a master’s degree in management and a bachelor’s degree in business management from Faulkner University and works in Robertsdale.

She is married to Lawrence Morrow, also a Cub Scout Leader, and they have two children, Brandon and Brett.
