Carolyn Hall Stewart, 91, a native of Bay Minette and resident of Monroeville, died at home Friday, May 30, 2014 from congestive heart failure.

Mrs. Stewart and her husband, William M. “Bill” Stewart, and their children owned and operated The Journal from 1947 to 1996, and WMFC from its founding in 1952 until now. Both the newspaper and the station are in Monroeville.

Mr. Stewart was also an owner of The Baldwin Times from 1954 to 1958.

Carolyn Hall was born in Bay Minette on Nov. 12, 1922 to Origen C. Hall and Orpah Mixon Hall. She graduated from Baldwin County High School.

Bill Stewart was editor of The Baldwin Times when he and his partner, the late Jimmy Faulkner, bought The Monroe Journal. Bill and Carolyn married in 1948. Bill died in 1995.

Survivors include three children, Steve Stewart (Patrice) of Troy, Orpah Stewart Travis (Allen) of Fort Myers, Fla. and David Stewart (Nancy) of Monroeville; and five grandchildren, Genyth Travis of Orlando, Fla., David Travis of Savannah, Ga., Matt Stewart of Los Angeles, Emily Stewart Baker (Dallas) of Greensboro, N.C. and Ryanne Stewart of Troy.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at 1 p.m., at Johnson Funeral Home in Monroeville, with the Rev. Glenn Eubanks and the Rev. Micah Gandy officiating.

Burial will follow in Pineville Cemetery.

The family will receive visitors Monday, June 2, 2014, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials to the Alabama Press Association Journalism Foundation, the Alabama Broadcasters Association Education Foundation, First Baptist Church of Monroeville, Pilots for Christ, or the Monroe County Hospital Foundation.
