GULF SHORES, Ala. — Josh Carroll had three touchdown runs and a field goal to pace the Gulf Shores Dolphins in a 37-24 5A Region 1 win over Citronelle on Friday.
Carroll scored from 4, 5, and 12 yards and hit a 27-yard field goal as time expired in the first half for the Dolphins (3-3, 1-3) on Homecoming night.
"Josh is our back and made some runs tonight that I had not seen in a long time," Gulf Shores head coach Ben Blackmon said. "I am very, very proud of Josh for the toughness that he brings to our team."
Gulf Shores jumped out to a 23-0 lead by halftime. The Dolphins scored near the end of the first quarter when Tyler Sellers returned a blocked Citronelle punt 10 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Brandon Silvers carried for a 5-yard touchdown on the Dolphins' next possession, and Carroll scored his first touchdown with 4:40 to play in the second quarter.
Citronelle (2-4) scored first in the second half on a 24-yard run by Elijah Pugh.
Carroll scored his second touchdown with 1:23 left in the third. On the ensuing kickoff, Conner Martin recovered a Citronelle fumble at the Gulf Shores 48, which led to Carroll's third touchdown run.
The Dolphins surrendered 18 points in the fourth quarter, but recovered a Citronelle onside kick attempt with 1:45 left and ran out the clock.
"We were able to move the football," Blackmon said. "We felt like we had them pegged on how they were going to line up and adjust in the second half. One thing I was not happy about was the way we got sloppy at the end and started turning the ball over. You just can't do that and win championships, and we want to win championships. That's what we strive for and we have to correct those mistakes."
