Catherine Earle Cortelyou, a native of Blacksher and a long time resident of Atlanta, died peacefully Saturday, July 23, 2011 at Mobile Infirmary Hospital.
She attended Rhodes College and Auburn University where she was a member of Tri Delta sorority. She was a dedicated teacher with the Atlanta Public School District for 33 years and was a member of the Atlanta Retired Teachers Association.
She served as treasurer and was an active member of the Fort Mims Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She also was an active member of the Stockton Fine Arts Club and achieved distinction as a master gardener. She was a member of Peachtree United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond C. Cortelyou; and her parents Thomas John Earle Sr. and Martha Mason Earle.
Survivors include two sisters, Martha Earle (William Calvin) Smith and Agnes Earle (Harry) Smith of Montrose; brother, Thomas John (Darlene) Earle Jr. of Blacksher; three nieces, Catherine Smith Sherrill of Birmingham, Elizabeth Earle Corbett of Mobile and Laura Elizabeth Smith of Tallahassee, Fla.; two nephews, William Calvin Smith IV of Daphne and Thomas John Earle III of Atlanta; five grand nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 27 at Montgomery Hill Baptist Church. Visitation will follow in the church fellowship hall.
