ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — Most of the 109 cattle involved in an accident Monday night near the tunnel on Interstate 10 are now resting comfortably at the Stockyard in Robertsdale.
George Campbell with the Stockyard said cattlemen from the area were able to rescue 84 of the cattle which were trapped when an 18-wheeler overturned coming out of the tunnel headed west on Interstate 10.
The cattle, mostly steers, were being transported from Arcadia, Fla., located about 90 miles south of Tampa and were headed toward the Midwest when the accident occurred around 9:30 p.m.
While they looked to be tired and in shock, the majority of the cattle at the Stockyard Tuesday morning appeared to be in good health.
The overturned rig closed traffic on the Interstate for approximately 11 1/2 hours Monday night and into the morning hours on Tuesday. Traffic was cleared on I-10 at just after 8 a.m. Tuesday morning, according to reports.
There was one human injury reported, but noone was seriously hurt in the accident, according to reports. So far, 25 cattle have reportedly died as a result of the accident.
Campbell said the Stockyard is waiting for an insurance adjuster’s report to determine the fate of the remaining cattle. In most cases, he said, to avoid further stress on the animals, the cattle would remain in Robertsdale, where they will be fed and rested and most likely will be sold at the Robertsdale auction on Monday.
