Causeway restaurant offerings expand with Tacky Jack’s site plan approval

SPANISH FORT, Ala.—The Causeway could welcome its newest eatery as early as Dec. 1.

Businessman Ken Kichler gained unanimous site plan approval during Monday’s regular Planning Commission meeting to convert the former Oysterella’s restaurant into the next Tacky Jacks Tavern.

Although the property is essentially “move-in” ready, Building Official Bruce Renkert said the site plan request was submitted to cover all bases because Kichler intends to add about 20 feet onto the back of an existing deck.

Plans also call for the addition of a stairwell leading to that deck, and Renkert said Kichler has designs on re-contouring the establishment’s existing parking lot.

Renkert said the re-contouring project requires only slight re-grading to improve drainage on the site and re-lining the spaces.

Kichler’s architect and developer also presented during a recent work session more detailed plans for future development on the site, but Kichler said the plans — which include an intricate boardwalk system and gazebo — are part of longer-term, conceptual plans to improve the property and have no immediate bearing on his ability to be operational by the first of next month.

Commissioner J.R. Smith asked Renkert whether the existing establishment — now under Kichler’s watch — would be subject to the same safety inspections required of new businesses before being allowed to open.

Renkert said his department will conduct all necessary inspections in concert with Spanish Fort Fire-Rescue prior to Tacky Jacks’ opening.

Tacky Jacks existing locations — which serve breakfast as well as offering patrons a traditional bar and grill, cigar bar and bistro — can be found in Orange Beach and Fort Morgan.
