Celebrating a century

DAPHNE, Ala. — Anna McKeown, a Mercy Medical resident, celebrated her 100th birthday party on Saturday.

She was born July 12, 1910 in Pittsburgh to Elmer McCoy, a trolley-car driver, and Anna McCoy; the couple had a son, Matt.

Anna — who worked as a telephone operator — married Eugene McKeown in 1929, and raised two sons, Eugene and John. After her cousin died, she took in a third child, Jerry Kurtz, and raised him as her own.

She was married for 62 years before her husband’s death. The couple — who traveled to 44 states — mostly enjoyed New England, Las Vegas, Florida and Chicago, but family members said they appreciated “anywhere in the USA.”

Today, Anna has 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren.

In 1997, John helped his mother relocate to a Fairhope apartment; she said she preferred the South’s humid weather to the North’s slippery ice. At age 87, when the time came for her to relocate to Mercy Medical, she packed up her home all by herself, family members said.

Anna is said to be a “great mother, homemaker, avid card player and traveler,” family members said.
