Centennial Plaza construction ahead of schedule

FOLEY, Ala. — Anyone passing by Heritage Park in Foley will notice that the Centennial Plaza is taking shape, with the beginnings of brickwork underway.

According to project superintendent J.J. Hoeschen, it won’t be long before the structure is complete.

“We expect to have it done by October,” he said in an interview at the construction site.

Hoeschen added that this is ahead of the November completion schedule.

Designed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Foley’s Jan. 8, 1915 incorporation, the Centennial Plaza will house a 52-foot musical clock tower, which can provide power for a keyboard so concerts can be held on the stage that will boast columns and a brick walkway —containing purchased markers honoring residents.

Last week, masons were preparing to waterproof the plaza’s brickwork and the structure’s grade would be raised.

Construction on the project began in May as 50 people attended a ground-breaking ceremony. At that time, the endeavor included preparing the site with such tasks as rerouting water lines.

Hoeschen said recent rain has interfered with construction, somewhat.

“We would come in at 6 in the morning, and it would start raining at 11 o’clock,” he said. “All we could do is cover everything up and go home.

But even with that, he expects to finish earlier than planned.

Once the plaza is complete, it should tie in with the rest of the brick structures in Heritage Park. Up close, it already appears cohesiv3e with the water fountain.

“It will all tie in with those columns,” Hoeschen said of the brick columns located near the wooden gazebo.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, city officials explained that the Centennial Plaza is a project that has been five years in the making, with volunteers being the driving force behind the endeavor.
