Central Baldwin Education Foundation plans to go ahead with Honeybee Run, despite cancellation of Festival

ROBERTSDALE, Ala. – The Central Baldwin Education Foundation is moving forward with plans to hold its second Honeybee 5K and 1-mile fun run/walk, despite the fact this year’s Festival has been cancelled.

Lisa Lucas with the Robertsdale Volunteer Fire Department said Wednesday the Festival, which was slated for its 22nd year on Saturday, Oct. 1, was cancelled because of a lack of funding.

“We’re going to try and have it next year,” she said, adding that the Honeybee Run, which is set to begin at 8 a.m., is still on.

The Festival is held each year as a fundraiser for the Fire Department. The run began last year as a fundraiser for the CBEF, an organization formed in July 2008 to benefit schools in Robertsdale, Silverhill, Loxley, Elsanor and Rosinton.

Beginning in the fall of 2009, the CBEF has given nearly $17,000 in grants and scholarships to local schools.

Deadline for early registration was Sept. 16, but late registration continues at a cost of $20 for adults, $15 for students. Registration forms can be obtained from the group’s website at cbef.org and mailed to P.O. Box 1399, Robertsdale, AL 36567.

Registration will also be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30 and from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1 at the George P. Thames Senior Center, 22651 E. Chicago St., Robertsdale.

Packet pick-up begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Center on the day of the race, which is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place overall male and female and first place overall juniors, masters, grandmasters and senior grandmasters as well as 14 age groups ranging from 0-7 to 70 and older. Shirts will also be given to the first 300 registrants.
