CEO helps focus Gulf Shores students on the environment

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Wil Tuggle, seventh-grade life science teacher at Gulf Shores Middle School, is organizing a group called Citizen Environmental Organization.

CEO is an organization designed to help students get involved with their community. CEO is about making the world a better place by taking action and getting involved. Some of the ideas for projects that Mr. Tuggle has for the group are:

Composting/gardening, recycling paper, aluminum, and plastic, helping the local zoo with relocation and animal supplies, helping the animal shelter with adoption and supplies, helping the school with supplies, fundraisers, and custodial, or having a food bank.

Some of the projects might be incorporated into the seventh-grade life science classes.

Members of the CEO will branch off into groups of four and they will get to pick who they want in their group. Members will get to decide what they want to do for their environmental projects. The meetings will be held at Mr. Tuggle’s classroom (room 114). Meetings will be held on Wednesdays at 7:30am. Optional meetings will be scheduled as needed.

The book Going Blue by Cathryn Berger Kaye and Phillipe Cousteau helped inspire the CEO. Going Blue tells what is happening to our ecosystem and what we can do to change what is going on in the environment. Phillipe Cousteau, one of the authors of the book Going Blue, said, “Everything you do makes a difference. What can you do to make a positive difference?” Some steps you could use to change the world are to investigate, then prepare, get into the act, reflect or think back on what you did, and then demonstrate it.

Mr. Tuggle said, “It is important for kids to know that they have a voice. Every single choice you make makes a difference in this world. You have to decide whether you will make a positive or negative difference.” CEO is a great way to get in touch with the community and I hope that you get the take advantage of the opportunity to join.?By: Megan Metz 8th Grade
