Chamber reinstates balloon festival

FOLEY, Ala. — Just over a month after officials at South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce announced plans to stop hosting the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival, they reversed that decision.

During Monday’s Foley Town Council Work Session, Council President Wayne Trawick announced that the Chamber Board of Directors made the decision in a special meeting held earlier that day.

In a phone interview Tuesday, Chamber President/CEO Donna Watts confirmed that announcement. She explained that the Chamber and the city of Foley will partner to present future Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival events.

“We are very proud to make this announcement” Watts said in a subsequent news release. “This signature event is important to the business community, the South Baldwin Chamber, the community and the city of Foley. The Chamber staff is excited and committed to unite their efforts in making the 2015 event just as memorable as the past 10 years have been.”

Chamber representatives said the city’s increase in the sponsorship and additional resources made the decision possible.

In early August, the Chamber announced its decision to discontinue hosting the festival after this past summer’s 10th annual event. Following that announcement, the Foley City Council voted to assume hosting the yearly festival. With that action, they gave Mayor John Koniar the authority to negotiate with a consulting company to explore the endeavor. The decision also included sending a city representative to the Great Mississippi River Balloon Race in October.

During Monday’s Council Work Session, City Administrator Mike Thompson advised the council to consider rescinding those actions.

“We certainly don’t want to compete with a second festival,” he said. “That’d be kind of goofy.”

City Councilman Rick Blackwell asked whether the dates of future festivals would continue to center around Father’s Day weekend.

“I think they’ll be looking to change that to sometime in the fall,” Thompson said.

Chamber officials confirmed plans are in the works for a new festival date.

Chamber Event Director Ashley Watkins said that updates will be released via social media once they become available. They can be accessed on Facebook or by visiting GulfCoastBalloonFestival.com.
