Mona Harper Charbonnet, a resident of New Orleans until 2005 when she moved to Daphne, died peacefully Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009 at her home in Daphne.
She was born May 30, 1916 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. After graduating from Margaret Eaton College in Nova Scotia, she came to New Orleans to teach at The Academy of the Sacred Heart. While there, she met the love of her life, Dr. L. Sidney Charbonnet Jr., and they were married in 1940.
She was recognized for her generous dedication to many community organizations throughout her life. She was very involved with the Orleans Parish Medical Auxiliary and served as president of Hotel Dieu Medical Auxiliary. She loved entertaining and spending time with family and friends. She was a member of the Orleans Club, the Southern Yacht Club “Bingoettes’ and most dear to her, The Sewing Circle.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. L. Sidney Charbonnet Jr., her parents, Dufferin Harper and Alice Byrne Harper of Glen Byrne, Westfield, New Brunswick; sister, Doreen Mary Harper of New Orleans; and two brothers, Judge James Harper and Donal Harper of Fredericton, New Brunswick.
Survivors include a son, L. Sidney (Millicent Donovan) Charbonnet III; grandchildren, Mona Charbonnet (John H. V) Musser of New Orleans, L. Sidney (Margaret Christy) Charbonnet IV of Pass Christian, Miss., Elizabeth Charbonnet (J. Daniel Jr.) Talmadge of Dothan and Millicent Donovan Charbonnet of Pass Christian; great-grand children, John, Byrne, and Donovan Musser, Christy, Sidney and Mary Lucy Charbonnet, Harper, Elizabeth, Helen, Millicent, and Joseph Talmadge; sister, Barbara Harper Meehan; a host of nieces, nephews and dear friends.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28 at Catherine Place in Daphne. Visitation begins at 1 p.m. with a memorial mass at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30 at Holy Name of Jesus Church, New Orleans.
The family requests memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Center, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or the charity of your choice.
