Billy David Chavous Jr., 49, a native of Spanish Fort and a former resident of Barnwell, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009.

He had a long and distinguished 31 years with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, where he received 37 awards. He started with the Corps at the age of 17, working (performing subsurface drilling for innumerable engineering projects throughout the) U. S. and Puerto Rico. In 1992, he transitioned to their main budget office, where he steadily rose through the ranks until 2002, when he was selected as Program Analyst.  He worked his entire career within the Engineering Division, and was highly respected as one of the best Program Analysts not only within the Mobile District, but also throughout the South Atlantic Region.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Angela G. Chavous; his grandparents, George W. Devine, Sarah Ann Lona Garner Devine, David  (Dink) Chavous and Ann Cobb Chavous Childers.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Elizabeth “Libby” Chavous; daughter, Shauna Elizabeth Chavous of Barnwell; son, Billy David Chavous III of Barnwell; step-daughter, Samantha Newsome of Barnwell; his parents, Bill and Eunice Chavous of Daphne; sister, Gina C. (Chuck) Riley; niece, Heather (Jacob) Jordan; nephews, Chaz Riley and Alec Riley, all of Milton, Fla.; other relatives and friends.

Visitation was held Tuesday, Nov. 24 at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, Daphne. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25 from the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Baldwin Memorial Cemetery, Robertsdale.
