FOLEY, Alabama – A car accident resulted in major injuries to a small child Monday evening in the Aaronville area. The child’s teenage uncle was later arrested for firing shots at the driver who hit the three-year-old, police said.
The child was playing on Eighth Avenue. Around 6:30 p.m., the child wandered into the street and was hit by a female driver, whose name was not released. The child’s uncle, 17-year-old Tremaine Chapman, immediately retaliated, according to the report.
After the driver exited the vehicle, Chapman shot two rounds into the air as he approached her before leveling the gun directly on the female. She charged Chapman, and two more rounds were fired in the struggle, before the Chapman fled in a Ford Expedition. He was stopped by officers on Michigan Avenue while fleeing the area.
Chapman is being charged as an adult for attempted first-degree assault. He may be facing further charges for carrying a stolen pistol.
The driver did not see the child when she struck him and she appeared to have no fault in the accident, Lt. Thurston Bullock said.
“The woman was traumatized for hitting the child, then had to go into immediate defensive mode for retaliatory reasons,” Bullock said. “She will, at this time, not be charged with anything.”
The child, whose name was also not released, was in critical condition earlier this week. According to the victim’s family, physicians were planning to take the toddler off of life support Wednesday.
“His grandmother said he was doing a lot better,” Bullock said.
