More than 200 children ranging from preschool age through sixth grade attended Christ the King Catholic Church’s Vacation Bible School in Daphne July 16–20. Approximately 150 adult and teen volunteers worked behind the scenes and as active participants to provide the opportunity for children to experience “A Wilderness Adventure through the Sacraments.” Alyssa Morisani served as the program’s director.
Participants spent the week learning about the Catholic faith’s seven sacraments through a variety of creative activities including crafts, games, skits, music and snacks.
Campers began and ended each day sharing prayer and singing songs with their crew leaders. Daily activities focused on one or more of the sacraments as well as stories from the Bible and one of the week’s virtues of courage, gratitude, perseverance, self-control, and hope. Children were also introduced to the lives of several saints, each providing stories of faith, integrity, and virtue for children to model.
Campers also participated in several service activities, including visiting the Little Sisters of the Poor Sacred Heart Residence, a Catholic nursing home in Mobile that provides nursing care and accommodations for the elderly. They also raised more than $340 in support for the 23 men in the Mobile Archdiocese who are preparing for ordination into the priesthood.
Plans for next year’s program are already underway and registration has been set for the spring of 2013.
