Christmas parade, set for Dec. 6, to benefit charities

SPANISH FORT, Ala.— The second annual ‘Spirit of Christmas’ Parade  is set for 9 a.m. Dec. 6 at the Eastern Shore Centre, and now is the time to fill out applications to participate in the festivities.

Applications for marching bands, choirs, floats, walking groups, dancers, organizations and more should be turned in by Dec. 1, according to Donna Dunning, permit clerk for the city.

A $25 application applies to all wanting to participate in the parade. Proceeds will be donated to local charities, according to a news release.

Last year’s parade had about 65 entries, Dunning said.

“It’s a charitable parade,” Dunning said. “We’re hoping for that many, if not more, this year.”

The Haven—a Fairhope-based no-kill animal shelter—and Prodisee Pantry—a nonprofit food pantry that provides food to families in need within Baldwin County—will help with charitable efforts for Christmas.

“I think there’s a lot more people in need this year,” Dunning said. “We really want to stress this parade is for charity.”

Monetary and tangible goods will be collected at the parade and can include canned and nonperishable food items to benefit the pantry.

Canned and dry dog and cat food are needed for The Haven.

Food can be dropped off at the fountain courtyard at the centre the morning of the parade.

All entries and floats should be decorated for the holiday season and throws should be holiday-themed, the release said.

A plan or sketch should also be submitted with the application, the release said.

The city has proclaimed 2008  to be Westminster Village Year to recognize its 25th anniversary.

Charter residents Janice Burton and Irene Ostberg will serve as the grand marshals of the parade, the release said.

Floats will be awarded to the most creative, best of show, and the mayor’s choice for the float or group, the release said.

Applications can be picked up at City Hall, the Eastern Shore Centre’s management office or printed online at www.cityofspanishfort.com.
