City annexes properties, postpones nuisance hearing

SPANISH FORT, Ala. – The City Council rezoned three properties and postponed a public hearing on a nuisance ordinance during a short, 20-minute meeting on Monday.

The council voted 6-0 on two of the measures, including one to rezone a portion of land located west of 1595 Battleship Parkway so that Lap’s Grocery can add parking to its restaurant location on the causeway. The council also rezoned a property at 7635 Spanish Fort Blvd., adjacent to the State Farm office.

In its final vote of the night the council approved the annexation of property at Rayne Plantation into the city limits. Rayne Plantation is a subdivision located on Hwy. 31. Councilwoman Mary Brabner abstained from voting on the measure, which passed 5-0.

The council was scheduled to hold a public hearing on a nuisance ordinance violation, but that was postponed until the April 7 meeting. Marcella Avenue resident Ken Hodges was ordered to clean up his property during a January council meeting. A neighbor of Hodges had reported to Building and Zoning Official Bruce Rinkert that Hodges had numerous large objects and things in his yard and on his porch in violation of the Nuisance Ordinance. The report was originally made in October.

City Attorney David J. Connor said that Hodges had made progress on the cleanup and was willing to let the city and his church finish the job.
