City noise ordinance should be enforced

For those Fairhope residents who want to experience loud, rowdy, disorderly, intoxicated behavior, you can now come to the corner of Bancroft Street and Equality Avenue any Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night between the hours of 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. This is now the location of two active bars with outdoor patios, live music, and an incredibly noisy clientele.

I have the unfortunate luck of living just down the street from both establishments and by virtue of this have begun an ongoing relationship with the Fairhope Police Department, Planning and Zoning, Alabama ABC, and the mayor’s office to protect my rights to quiet and privacy.

There are many existing city ordinances designed to control these problems, however they are not being actively enforced by any of the above mentioned agencies without my continuous prodding.

For instance, there is a noise ordinance stating that outdoor live music must cease at 10 p.m. The bar owners routinely ignore this ordinance requiring me to call the Fairhope Police and have a police officer sent to the bar to remind the owners over and over and over again about the ordinance. This is clearly a waste of valuable police time.

If the bars will not obey the laws of the city, their licenses should be rescinded, and they should be shut down.
