ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — The City of Robertsdale passed Resolution No. 012-10 at their Monday morning meeting to increase the pole attachment fee for Southern Light LLC of Mobile from $8.50 to $16.50 for each pole, which will provide an extra $1,500 in revenue for the city.

Southern Light provides fiber optic communication services to the city and uses the poles to run the cables, amplifiers and other associated equipment and contracted with the city in January, 2004, according to the resolution.

Mayor Charles Murphy said in a memo to the council Greg Fender of Local Government Services had helped them previously with the Mediacom contract in 2009 and had recently secured a $16.50 rate for Riviera Utilities with Southern Light this month.

“Our price is right on on target with what they are already paying them and our contract doesn’t renew until January 24, 2014. There is a renegotiating clause that allows us to give six months notice if we want to change the terms or cancel the agreement. That’s why we need to secure a resolution so we can begin this process, “ Murphy said.

Southern Light is currently using 190 poles and with the $8.50 rate was paying $1,650. The amount will increase to $3,135 when the $16.50 rate goes into effect. According to the resolution, Southern Light has 30 days to accept the new agreement.

The council also passed a motion to amend Section 4-9 of Ordinance No. 013-10: Keeping Loud and Noisy Dog Unlawful. Robertsdale Police Chief Brad Kendrick said the wording was incorrect and needed to be corrected.

According to the ordinance, the word “county” should be changed to “municipal” referring to the penalty section of the ordinance.

“Penalty. Any person violating any provision of this ordinance shall be fined not less than one dollar ($1.00) nor more than one-hundred dollars ($100.00) or imprisoned in the municipal jail for a period not to exceed three (3) months, or both, at the discretion of the judge or recorder typing the case.”

Kendrick said they will be revamping the ordinance in the next couple of months and reworking the fines so it will benefit the dog owner better.

City employees were recognized for the service and awarded plaques. Those receiving awards for five years of service were: Jerry Rada,Maintenance Coordinator, Terry Simpson, Parks and Recreation Coordinator, Aaron Roberts, City Mechanic, Ted Stone, Corporal, Police Department, and Scott Gilbert, Director of Public Works.
