City of Robertsdale planning splash pad at Garrett Park

ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — Splish, splash, the city of Robertsdale is looking to build a pad, a splash pad that is, and city officials hope to have the project completed by May of next year.

After a pair of public meetings on the proposed water park, which will be located at the corner of Pennsylvania Street and Park Drive at the entrance to Garrett Park, Mayor Charles Murphy came before council members at the Oct. 3 meeting to move forward with plans for the facility.

Council members voted unanimously at the meeting, choosing a baseball theme over railroad and farming for the proposed 2,000 square foot facility, which has a $135,000 budget for 2012.

Plans are also moving forward, Murphy said, to increase the water pressure required for the pad, while fixing an issue with water pressure along Hammond Street.

“We currently have a 2-inch line running through the park and we are going to move ahead with plans to put in a 6-inch line, while at the same time, running a line around Hammond Street to fix water pressure problems in that area,” Murphy said. “Our goal is to go ahead and have that in place by the end of the year and be ready to pour the pad in January so we can be operational by May of 2012.”

The city also plans to build a new restroom facility for the area, Murphy said.

The city currently has four vendors that will present plan proposals for consideration at the council’s Nov. 7 planning meeting.

“There are just so many fixtures to choose from it can make your eyes cross,” Murphy said. “By presenting the overall theme and layout to the vendors, the plan is for them to come up with a plan for the park. We can choose which plan we want to go with and go from there.”
