Classes on homes offer tips with staying power

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — “The ‘Fifty-Year Home’ class is intended to help us learn how to live in our homes and neighborhoods for many years, without feeling the need to relocate or up scale every seven years or so,” said Mac Walcott, the Fairhope architect who will teach the class starting tomorrow night at the University of South Alabama Baldwin County campus.

The 12-week continuing education course will instruct a lay person in the revitalization of their existing home, emphasizing the right-sizing and right-styling, a USABC news release stated.

The importance of creating a healthy environment, energy and resource conservation and stable communities will be discussed, the news release said.

Walcott has been with Walcott, Adams and Verneuille Architects for over 23 years. A registered architect in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi, he also serves as a member of the Alabama Council of the American Institute of Architects and received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Tulane University.
