Classical guitarist to perform at library Aug. 10

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Come enjoy an evening of classical guitar courtesy of David McCurdy.

McCurdy has been enamored with music ever since hearing the superb, virtuosic playing of Chet Atkins.  His parents gave him a year of guitar lessons as a young boy. After completing the entire guitar program in that year, his first guitar instructor said, “By the time you’re 16, you’ll be an amazing player.”

Well, it didn’t happen. Instead, his parents decided to switch him to the keyboard and gave him two years of piano lessons.  Although he took a liking to the piano, the guitar remained his first passion.

McCurdy went on to college earning a degree in mechanical engineering, a field in which he still works today.

After raising a family and settling in Cleveland, Ohio, McCurdy picked up his old guitar and began playing again.

He decided to return to college and study classical guitar performance at the University of Akron in Ohio under the tutelage of Professor Steve Aron.

Currently, McCurdy has finished his second year in classical guitar.

“What I want to eventually do after completing my studies at Akron is to bring the beauty of the classical guitar into the church.  There is nothing like hearing Bach or a beautiful arrangement of an old gospel song as played on the nylon string guitar,” he said.

Please come experience this musical journey at the Thomas B. Norton Public Library Aug. 10 at 6 p.m.  Light refreshments will be served following the performance.
