LOXLEY, Alabama — Taylor Coleman from San Antonio, carded a 7-under-par 65 in the Girls Division to take the first-round lead at the AJGA Junior at Steelwood presented by AT&T. Vasili Kartos of Birmingham, Ala., leads the pack in the Boys Division with a 5-under-par 67.

Coleman’s round got off to a fast start with five birdies on the front nine. After carding her only bogey on the par-5 10th hole, Coleman regrouped and holed three more birdies on the back nine.

“I’ve been practicing a lot for this,” said Coleman, a high school junior, who has verbally committed to play at Arizona State. “I knew if I just hit greens I should be able to make some putts and shoot under par, which I did.”

Payton Schanen of Alpharetta, Ga., is alone in second place with a 4-under-par 68. Tatum Jackson of Mountain Brook, Ala., is in third after carding a 3-under-par 69. Fairhope's Virginia Green is in fourth place with a 2-under-par 70.

In the Boys Division, Kartos, leads the way with a 5-under-par 67. After a front-nine even-par 36, Kartos found a rhythm on the back nine with five birdies, including the final three holes.

“My putting has not been strong and I was not really sure if I was going to make putts but today was just a day where putts fell,” Kartos said. “I have not putted like that in a while and I was just excited to hole putts from all over.”

Nicholas Cortez of Hoover, Ala., shot a 4-under 68 and is in second place. Tyler Joiner of Albany, Ga., Nathan Williams of Gainesville, Ga., Connor Smith of Birmingham, Ala., and Wilson Furr of Jackson, Miss., all carded rounds of 3-under-par 69 and share third place.

Second-round tee times will run from 7 a.m. – 12:10 p.m. off the No. 1 tee at Steelwood Country Club
