DAPHNE, Alabama - Tommie Conaway, known throughout Baldwin County for 36 years as an educator until her retirement in 2009, became the District 1 representative of this municipality Monday night after receiving four of six votes from the City Council. Conaway will serve the unexpired term vacated by Bailey Yelding Jr. upon his promotion to mayor last month.
Conaway told the council she was delighted to be chosen and looked forward to getting to work.
I’m looking forward to serving the people of Daphne and the district,” Conaway said. “After being in the education field, I wanted to step out and continue to serve the community, and this is a wonderful opportunity.”
Conaway would not say whether she would seek the seat in next year’s general election, but said she would see how things pan out.
“I know many of these constituents personally,” she said. “Working with parents and students and watching students grow up leave and come back and be successful, that’s a valuable resource. I will take [this job] very seriously.”
Conaway was principal at Daphne East 2004-2009 and served the position at Daphne Intermediate, 1992-2004; and Foley Middle, 1988-92. She was an administrative intern at Fairhope Elementary, 1987-88; a fourth-grade teacher at Daphne Elementary, 1982-87; and a Title I reading and math teacher at Robertsdale Elementary, 1975-82.
