Conaway seeks re-election to Daphne City Council

Tommie Conaway has announced that she is seeking re-election to the Daphne City Council as District 1 representative. Conaway filled the unexpired term of Bailey Yelding, Jr. who was appointed mayor after the resignation of Mayor Fred Small in 2011. She was elected full term on the council in 2012. During her first term, Conaway served as council president, president pro tempore and chairperson of Finance, Public Works and Public Safety Committees. She has also served as liaison for the Industrial Development Board and Downtown Redevelopment Authority Board. The Council has made significant beginnings these past four years. Construction of more sidewalks provides health, safety, economic and environmental benefits. Road improvements continue to make a tremendous impact with traffic congestion. The new recreational projects in three areas of the city will allow Daphne to respond to residential growth by planning open space and recreational opportunities. “I am proud to say we have continued to make progress in Daphne,” Conaway said. One of the most important accomplishments is the recent approval of the Whispering Pines/Pollard Road community sewer project. Five other areas in the city are still in need of city sewer. “I want to complete the work that we have begun,” she said. As the city of Daphne looks to the future, the focus should continue to stay on economic development and job growth, supporting the educational system, maintaining strong financial stability, and ensuring our infrastructure and public safety officials have the resources needed to meet the needs of our city. As a retired educator, Conaway served Baldwin County Public Schools as a teacher for 13 years and a principal for 21 years. She serves on the Community Action Agency of South Alabama Board of Directors, Thomas Hospital Advisory Board, Thomas Hospital Health Authority Board and FEEF Advisory Council. Conaway is a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church where she serves as trustee, nursery director, Sunday School teacher, and foreign mission ministry leader. She is married to Francis B. Conaway. They have one daughter, Leah Conaway (Dominic) Washington and two grandsons.
