POINT CLEAR — The Annual Confederate Memorial Service at Confederate Rest Cemetery in Point Clear, sponsored by the Fort Blakeley Camp 1864, Sons of Confederate Veterans of Baldwin County, will be held Sunday at 2 p.m.
The cemetery is the final resting place for over 300 Confederate soldiers who died at the Confederate hospital facility located on the Grand Hotel grounds from 1861-1865. Only 46 soldiers have been identified; many markers have been placed in recent years. Civilian graves date from the early 1800s, and descendants of many of these families still live in the area.
Bert Blackmon, well-known Baldwin County genealogist and heritage figure, will present the address. The Charles S. Stewart Chapter 2390, United Daughters of the Confederacy will participate with a wreath-laying ceremony. Confederate reenactors will participate and fire cannon and rifle volley salutes.
The public is welcome and invited to attend. Chairs will be provided for everyone’s comfort. Take Scenic 98 (South Mobile Street) and turn left .75 miles south of the Grand Hotel on Confederate Rest Road.
For more information, contact Camp 1864 Commander Tommy Rhodes at (251) 979-2038.
