Cookie caper leads to forgery arrest

FOLEY, Ala. — Police arrested a 34-year-old woman last week and charged her with second-degree forgery after she paid for $1,500 in Girl Scout cookies with checks she allegedly created.

Carmen Hermecz of Cardinal Circle was arrested on Thursday, March 19. According to Lt. David White, lead investigator at Foley Police Department, Hermecz got the cookies from a local Troop Leader. The Girl Scouts initially had trouble getting the money from Hermecz, who eventually wrote two checks to cover the cost of the cookies.

One check was for $1,197 and another for $98, White said, adding that they were “not real checks” and were on an account that didn’t exist.

Hermecz returned some of the cookies but sold the rest of them, White said.

Second-degree forgery is a Class C felony punishable by not more than 10 years in prison or less than one year and one day.
