The front-page article in the Nov. 23 edition of The Onlooker, titled “Merchant questions fire policy,” contained the following errors or need for clarification:

  • Troy Barrett’s last name was misidentified.
  • The fire-code violation was regarding the requirements for inspection and testing of his existing fire sprinkler and fire alarm systems by a certified contractor. It did not require the installation of a sprinkler system and fire-alarm system and was not conducted by the Foley Fire Department.
  • It needs to be clarified that the $950 charge was made by that contractor for work done on a detailed, five-year inspection.
  • The clarification needs to be made that the fire department’s inspections only seek to verify inspections and tests conducted by the independent contractors.
  • It needs to be clarified that Foley Fire Chief Joey Darby’s reference to a $175 inspection fee was what the Foley Fire Department paid for its last inspection.
  • It needs to be clarified that Darby’s reference to improvements was a suggestion to better define the differences in the requirements of a five-to year maintenance test by a certified contractor and an annual test/inspection by a certified contractor so that our business owners would know that they would not be likely to have to spend the same amount of money on each.

The Onlooker apologizes for any inconvenience caused.
