Council adds three members to education committee

FAIRHOPE, Ala. – The Fairhope City Council voted unanimously to add three members to the city’s Education Advisory Committee during its regular meeting on Monday.

Council member Diana J. Brewer said that the EAC had been operating as a six member group but an additional three members will be beneficial.

“The mission of the Education Advisory Committee is to be our liaison between the schools and the city,” Brewer said. “And since the city is taking a more active role in supporting the schools, the role of the EAC is becoming more and more important.

“I would encourage people who are interested in the Fairhope schools to submit their applications. If they have any sort of background in education or if they have just been active in the schools, in the PTC or what have you, this committee could really use some good minds to help out.”

Residents can apply for the EAC or any city committee at the City Clerk’s office or online here.

The council also accepted for maintenance the pedestrian easement along the shoreline near the White Avenue Pier.

“This land recently reverted back to Fairhope Single Tax Colony,” councilmember Jack Burrell said. “Fairhope Single Tax Colony will lease the land back to the homeowners. This is only for the council to accept the maintenance of a 20-foot right-of-way upon which Single Tax Colony has plans to construct a pedestrian sidewalk.”

The council also approved the selection of Preble Rish LLC for engineering services for the Morphy Avenue sidewalk construction project and approved the purchase of a John Deere 5045E Open Station Utility Tractor, 553 Standard Loader and a Backhoe for the Recreation Department for approximately $32,714.79.
