SILVERHILL, Ala. — The Silverhill Town Council enjoyed a relatively light agenda Tuesday night as its first meeting in September was postponed to the day after Labor Day.
The only item on the agenda was the gas contract with Riviera Utilities. Mayor Tim Wilson told Council members that he would sign the contract if no objections were raised. None was offered at Tuesday’s meeting.
The council approved payment for the town’s natural gas distribution system from Riviera Utilities in the amount of $175,000 at the council’s July 21 meeting.
Riviera Utilities existing rates will be immediately applied upon closing of the purchase which will result in a decreased monthly bill for a typical existing Silverhill customer, according to an August release by the Foley-based utilities company.
In addition to the initial purchase price, Riviera will pay an annual franchise fee to the Town, offer in-home appliance repair service and offer new services for residents who are not currently gas customers. Natural Gas is a safe, efficient, dependable, and GREEN energy source. For information about natural gas and benefits of gas appliances, visit www.takecomfortinit.com .
Riviera Utilities serves many areas of South Baldwin County with natural gas, electric, water, waste water, and cable television.
Riviera Utilities serves approximately 38,856 electric customers, 3,494 gas customers, 9,567 water customers, 4,584 wastewater customers and 5,980 cable customers in South Baldwin County.
In other business Tuesday, the council:
— Voted to allow Wilson to sign a temporary debris removal contract with Baldwin County until a new contract could be put in place.
— Received a proposal from Fire Chief Gary Patrick for reimbursement of clothing expenses for volunteer firefighters. The council has approximately $3,500 set aside in the 2007-08 fiscal year budget, which ends Sept. 30.
— Will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. Sept. 8 to discuss impact fees. The Council also decided to discuss the budget at the Monday meeeting.
— Voted to annex property on West Boulevard owned by Charles Collins.
A relatively short meeting was lengthened when Council Member Michael Allegri called for an executive session, “to discuss the good name and character of an individual.”
After meeting in an open forum for 35 minutes, the council met behind closed doors for approximately 40 minutes. Following the executive session, the council met for another 15 minutes before adjourning. No other action was taken following the executive session.
