SPANISH FORT, Ala. — Fall at 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center kicks into high gear Sept. 19 with Covenant Hospice’s third annual Turtle Derby.
The event offers online adoptions of rubber turtles for a suggested donation of $5 each, and the proceeds help offset the cost of hospice care for uninsured patients in the Mobile area.
Some 70 spectators turned out for the event in 2009 to cheer on 772 contenders that swarmed down Sardine Pass in search of the elusive checkered flag. The event netted $3,500.
Jackie Crews, development manager for Pensacola, Fla.-based Covenant’s Mobile office, said the event is designed to create a family-friendly atmosphere that takes advantage of the area’s abundant natural resources while offering a more affordable way for everyday residents to contribute to the cause.
“Ticket prices for so many silent auctions and galas can be so high, and we wanted to create a fun and affordable event,” said Crews, who found her inspiration for via rubber duck derbies nationwide that attract as many as 10,000 participants.
The local event assumed a turtle theme, however, at the suggestion of 5 Rivers Manager Hank Burch in honor of the area’s indigenous red-bellied turtle, the official state reptile.
Crews is expecting 1,000 turtles to vie for bragging rights during this year’s event that kicks off at 2:30 p.m. with activities such as face painting, inflatables, crafts, a coloring contest and the Gulf Coast Tumblebus. The race will begin promptly at 4:30 p.m.
This year’s top prizes include a University of Alabama football autographed by Nick Saban; a weekend get-away package for two to Isle Casino in Biloxi; a Dining-Out Package with $250 in gift certificates from local restaurants; and a one-night stay for two at the Battle House. The 5 Rivers Delta Safaris pontoon boat, “The Pelican,” will also be giving 30-minute tours for $5 per person.
