DAPHNE, Ala.—University of Alabama softball pitcher Kelsi Dunne was named the United States Sports Academy Alabama Athlete of the Month for May, the second month in a row she has earned the honor.
The sophomore became the first to throw back-to-back no-hitters in postseason play as the Crimson Tide swept Jacksonville State with consecutive 9-0 victories in the Super Regionals in Tuscaloosa, earning Alabama its sixth berth in the Women’s College World Series.
Finishing second was French swimmer Fred Bousquet. The Auburn University alumnus and world record holder in the 50-meter freestyle won the 50- and 100-meter freestyle at the Charlotte Ultra Swim in North Carolina, defeating 14-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps by .82 seconds in the 100.
Beating Phelps that same weekend and finishing third in the Alabama balloting is another Auburn alumnus Aaron Peirsol. Peirsol won the 100-meter backstroke final at the Charlotte Ultra Swim meet. As the world record holder in the event, he held off a late challenge from Phelps to win with a time of 53.32 seconds, .47 faster than his Olympic teammate.
The academy’s Alabama Athlete of the Month is selected by a voting committee that includes members of the statewide media and representatives of Alabama sports organizations. Each winner is automatically added to the Alabama Athlete of the Year ballot at the end of the calendar year.
