Cross country teams "run the plank" in middle school meet

FAIRHOPE, Alabama — The competition was for “real” Tuesday in the annual “Real Pirates Run the Plank” cross-country two-mile meet at Fairhope High.

The meet always features some of the future front runners in high-school and collegiate running from Baldwin and Mobile middle school teams. The 2012 edition saw some quality times in both the 1A and 2A divisions and has been a 1A Girls team competition.

Bayside Academy swept the girls 1A race with a one, two. three, four finish at the line plus three more Lady Admirals in the top 10. Elberta was second with runners taking fifth, sixth and ninth. Perdido was third in the 1A team standings.

Individually, Mary Catherine Branyon was the 1A girls champion with Bayside teammates, Sara Meehon, Abby Warner and 4 Delaney Klutes right behind her. Elberta’s Amairani Pimente and Julianna Battaglia were fifth and sixth. Bayside’s Beth Caldwell and Haley Tripp were seventh and eighth while Ashlyn Bankston of Elberta and Madison Grace of Bayside took ninth and 10th.

Elberta came out on top in the 1A boys race with Bayside second and Perdido third.

Josh Simek of Elberta was first, David Williams of Bayside second and Jordan Frank of EMS third. The Elberta Raiders dominated the top 10 with Cade Stokely fourth, Bayside’s Jacob Hartley fifth followed by an all EMS crew: 6, Andrew Trattles; 7, Chason Merchant; 8, Eduardo Hernandez; 9, Drew Johansen. The 10th-place finisher was not identified in time for this report. In the 2A Girls race, Team St Paul’s won followed by Fairhope, Gulf Shores, Daphne and Central Baldwin. Bay Minette Middle, Spanish Fort and UMS-Wright competed but not as teams.

The individual winner and top finishers were: 1, Gracie Whiston STP; 2, Allison Daniels UMS-W; 3, Sarah Kane UMS-W; 4, Caroline Douglas UMS-W; 5, Lane Start FMS; 6, Lisee Conwell STP; 7, Victoria Blanshan DMS, 8, Elizabeth Romanos STP; 9, Madelyn Wells CBM and 10, Brodie Cooper CBM.

In the 2A Boys race, Spanish Fort outscored Fairhope and Bay Minette for the trophy. Daphne edged out UMS-Wright for fourth while Central Baldwin took sixth ahead of St. Paul’s seventh and Gulf Shores eighth.

The top individual 2A Boys were: 1, Jeb Milling STP; 2, Cooper Sewell SF; 3, Landon Cushing; 4, Kevin Jones SF; 5, Jack Morgan SF; 6, Matthew Piedra SF; 7, Noah Brown SF; 8, Avery Lancaster STP.
