Cuhaj to speak about the great outdoors

DAPHNE, Ala. — The great outdoors will be the day’s topic when author Joe Cuhaj visits the Daphne Public Library at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Cuhaj — a Daphne resident and author of “Hiking Alabama” — will discuss the book’s third edition, along with the writing process.

The travel and hiking-trail guide explores outdoor Alabama from Mobile to Huntsville; the 328-page guide is Cuhaj’s most recent project. The first edition of “Hiking Alabama” came out six years ago.

“The combination (of travel and hiking- trail information) tells, for example, about hiking trails in Bon Secour; then says to visit nearby Gulf Shores and check out their hotels, restaurants and maybe even the Shrimp Festival,” he said.

“There’s something in it for everyone,” he added. “There’s stuff for hardcore hikers and family hikes.”

Cuhaj said he believes that Alabama has the most ecologically diverse trails in the United States.

“You can do canyon, waterfall, mountain or wetland hiking. The only hiking you can’t do in Alabama is desert,” he said.

Cuhaj cited a long-time love of hiking and writing as the start to his book.

“I’ve been hiking for over 30 years and I started writing in high school,” he said. “I liked hiking and I always loved to write — then this book sort of came about by accident.”

Cuhaj’s other books include “Paddling Alabama” and “Baseball in Mobile.” He also is a freelance writer and does articles for “Backpacker” magazine and has worked in radio and television.

Wednesday’s session is part of the library’s Jubilee Mornings series. A local author visits the library each month and discusses his or her book, along with the writing practice.

The event is held in the community room of the library, located at the corner of U. S. Highway 98 and Whispering Pines Road in Daphne. Refreshments will be provided by Friends of Daphne Public Library.
