The Thomas Fitness Center, attached to Fairhope’s Thomas Hospital, already has many amenities available to help clients lead more healthy lifestyles, but the latest addition to the facility incorporates state-of-the-art technology to help give people a better sense of their overall health.
The fitness center’s new Fit3D body scanner monitors a wide range of health components, including bone density, BMI, body age, total body water composition and even a waist to hip ratio.
Jennifer Savell, a personal trainer for the fitness center, said the Fit3D scanner is a wonderful tool for area residents to take advantage of.
“It shows 400-plus body measurements,” Savell said. “It gives you a 3-D image online where you can track your data. It tells your body weight, total body water. It can show you if you’re getting enough protein or enough minerals in your diet –it’s a really amazing tool.”
Savell said the scanner breaks health components down to better help trainers like her help clients target areas or issues they made need to work on.
“The scan also tell us muscle and fat composition for the various parts of your body,” Savell said. “Sometimes, muscle development might be greater on a certain side of the body and this scanning process can show us that.”
The entire process takes minimal amounts of time.
“The scanning process really only takes a few minutes overall,” Savell said. “Filling out the paperwork that goes along with it takes more time than it does.”
Savell said once the scans are done, users can have the data and 3-D model sent to their email, where they’ll be able to login and check on their progress.
“The scan really helps give you a blueprint for what you might need to work on,” Savell said. “Maybe you need more water intake, maybe you need to shed a few pounds to help get you to a more ideal BMI. The whole process is really just a way to help people find out what their issues are so that we can help them figure out the best way to achieve their fitness goals.”
Jill Everson, manager of the facility, said many of the clients have already taken advantage of the scanner since it has been at the facility since the beginning of July.
“We’ve had dozens of people come in to use it and said they had their eyes opened by what they needed to address,” Everson said. “And people don’t have to be members here to take advantage of the scanner – we welcome anyone in the community who wants to learn more about their health to come and learn more with us.”
Using the scanner costs $60 for Fitness Center members and $75 for non-members, a price that Everson said is actually a bargain for people.
“With all of the factors this scan measures, you’d be paying a lot more money to get all of the information from multiple types of tests,” Everson said. “This Fit3D system is accurate, cutting edge and it’s not time consuming at all.”
