MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Daphne advanced past the first round for the first time since 2012 with a 24-6 win over Sidney Lanier at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery Thursday night.

First-year Daphne head coach Kenny King and company picked up their ninth-straight victory in the opening round of the Class 6A playoffs.

Leading 9-6 in the second quarter, the Trojans’ Ty Reynolds picked off a Poets pass and returned it 70 yards to spot DHS a 16-6 lead at halftime.

Daphne quarterback Chance Newman had tossed a 29-yard touchdown pass to Ja'Quan Myles and Diego Guajardo added a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter before Reynolds’ momentum swinging pick-six.

Daniel Taylor closed the scoring for the Trojans on a 2-yard run in the third quarter as the Daphne defense pitched a shutout down the stretch. Mike Franklin’s 136 yards on 22 carries helped balance Newman’s passing all night.

The Poets scored in the first quarter when Da'Coreyon Johnson caught a 53-yard pass from James Foster in.

The Trojans’ nine-game streak started after a region loss to neighboring Eastern Shore rival Spanish Fort and a tough overtime loss to Class 7A Davidson in the 2016 opener.

Daphne (9-2) has now made the Class 6A playoffs for 19 consecutive years since King played for former Trojan coach Steve Savarese. Daphne is set to host Opelika (which defeated Paul Bryant,Tuscaloosa) at Jubilee Stadium in the second round Friday night.
