Daphne beats Fairhope for Region 2 title

DAPHNE, Ala. – The Trojans emerged from another classic 6A Region 2 battle holding the rivalry-trophy Jubilee Cup in one hand and the region lead in the other.

The 28-14 Trojan win over Fairhope at Jubilee Stadium Friday left 8-0 DHS with a 6-0 region record and a lock on the region title with McGill-Toolen Catholic (6-2, 4-2) at home Oct. 22 while Fairhope (5-3, 5-1) travels to Williamson on Thursday to close out the region run needing a win to clinch the second playoff seed.

The Pirates scored twice as many points on the No.1-ranked 6A defense (DHS had allowed just 7.1 ppg in seven games) than other opponents, but it would not be enough. The Trojan offense scored three touchdowns and once on a special teams kickoff return.

The Pirates scored first at 7:45 in the second period, but the Trojans led 14-7 at the half and 21-7 three-minutes, 31 seconds into the third period. Fairhope countered closing to within seven at 21-14 and appeared to have momentum when Tyrell Holloway took the ensuing kickoff all the way back from the three. Brandon Roberts' fourth PAT made it 28-14 with 2:51 remaining in the third. FHS starting quarterback Chase Domino then went down with a severe shoulder injury on the next drive limiting the Pirates offensive options in the final period. Nate Andrews, Tanner Martin and Willie Woodyard moved the ball 54 yards, with four first downs on the three following drives but did not score. Nick Cutrone was 2-for-2 on extra points. He and Roberts missed field goal attempts of 34 and 50 yards.

Trojans coach Glenn Vickery, who also picked up his 200th career win as a head coach, said it wasn't one or two plays that decided the outcome.

“Every play is big,” he said. “There was a big play in the kicking game, and we had some good punts that set them back. We adjusted and moved the ball. I am just proud of our kids for coming out and winning the region.”

Fairhope coach David Faulkner said even though his team played hard, effort alone is not enough against teams that capitalize quickly on any mistake.

“We either turned the ball over or mis-executed, and that is the difference in all big ballgames. We got some drives going, then hit a bump in the road. You can't stall out against a good team like that. We have to finish strong, not just start out strong. There were critical moments in the game, and they made the plays and we didn’t.”

After nearly 20 minutes of good defense by both sides, Andrews' 1-yard TD capped a 12-play, 67-yard FHS drive to make it 7-0.

DHS answered on their next two drives going 83 yards on the first including a Russ Mosley-to-Justin Jackson pass to set up a 7-yard TD by Holloway with 5:08 left in the half. The next drive went 65 yards on nine snaps ending with T.J. Yeldon scoring on a sweep from the four 57 seconds before the break.

Daphne had deferred the opening kickoff until the second half, started at their 10 and went 90 yards. Isreal Lamprakes caught the only pass of the drive for seven yards on a third-and-8. DHS went for the first down with Lamprakes keeping it from the shotgun for three and a first down at the DHS 44. Yeldon took it in four plays later from the two.

The Pirates came back to make it 21-14 on a 76-yard, all-run, 15-play drive that took more than five minutes before Martin took it over from the Daphne five.

But the Holloway kickoff return to make it 28-14 and injury to Domino's shoulder left the Pirates in a tough spot. With Andrews taking snaps the remainder of the game, the last and longest drive moved the ball from the Pirate 26 to the Daphne 32 before a fumble ended the come back at the DHS 27.

For Daphne, Yeldon had 50 yards with two touchdowns on 14 carries, Holloway added 39 yards on eight carries and Russ Mosley was 10-of-14 passing for 126 yards. On defense, Daphne's Eric Lee had two sacks and deflected a Domino pass that Ryan Anderson controlled for an interception, but the FHS defense forced a punt.

Domino ran for 59 yards on 13 keepers and went 8-of-14 passing for 54 yards with one interception before the injury.

Tanner Martin added 82 yards on 20 carries and Nate Andrews ran 11 times for 70 yards. Woodyard carried seven times for 34 yards.

Vickery downplayed the milestone 200th win. "Tonight was about big win No. 8, not big No. 200. Winning the region makes it big. We hoped to control the ball better, but give credit to coach (David) Stapleton (Fairhope defensive coordinator) and their defense for keeping us from running the ball as well as we wanted. We knew Chase Domino and their offense would be hard to stop, but we made some adjustments and came out with a win on a good team."
