DAPHNE – The Fairhope Lady Pirates took 2-of-3 wins over Daphne this year, but the Lady Trojans got the last W of the regular season at home Tuesday night 7-3.
Daphne scored early and built a strong lead before the Lady Pirates rallied late.
“I think we're playing as well as we have all year right now,” said Daphne coach L.T. Yelding whose team finished the 6A Area 4 race at 29-19 behind top-ranked Satsuma.
Fairhope finished the regular season at the top of Area 3 with a 36-12 record and hosted Foley and Robertsdale in their area tournament which began Thursday.
On Tuesday Fairhope coach Jonathan Heflin was proud of his players for not quiting after falling behind 6-0 after five innings. Key defensive plays by Daphne, especially an amazing double-play catch by right fielder Morgan Lucassen to rob Brooklin Caudill of an extra-base hit with runners in scoring position stifled one serious FHS comeback. First baseman Jennifer Fisher also made a heads up play after a close double-play attempt to throw out a runner at the plate to end another Fairhope rally.
“I'm proud of our girls for staying in there and fighting hard after we fell behind 6-0," Heflin said. "We had a chance there at the end, but Daphne played better than us tonight."
Daphne sophomore right hander Tristan Kitchens improved to 17-9 Peyton Grantham had two RBIs off three hits, Jennifer Turner had a double and two singles, Amber Henson also had three hits while Tabitha McGowan and Fisher each had two hits for Daphne.
Courtney Piesco hit her first home run to score two runs and also doubled while Grey Adams and Skylar Miller each added a pair of hits for the Lady Pirates.
