DAPHNE—The Daphne Trojans combined the ground game and effective passing to shutout Robertsdale 27-0 at Jubilee Stadium Friday night.
RHS head coach Scott Phelps said his team missed some key opportunities to keep it close, especially in the first half.
"When it came down to it, they made some big plays, we had some opportunities on third down and we didn't convert. That was basically the first half. The second half was pretty much the same and it was really decided in the first half."
DHS coach Glenn Vickery said his team prepared well for the Bears and had good blocking up front.
"I think we had a good week of practice and our offensive line did a good job," he said. "They blocked well and got the ball down the field and our defense did a great job of getting the ball back. It was just a total team effort by our guys. Im very proud of them."
The Golden Bears held DHS to four downs and minus one yard on the Trojans' first possession, then failed to score on their first and best drive of the night.
RHS drove from their 45 to the DHS 20, but were forced to attempt a 30-yard field goal that had the distance but was wide right.
Daphne went ahead 3-0 on their next series going 70 yards on eight plays, but were stopped at the 13 from where Brandon Roberts nailed a 30-yard field goal with 4:23 left in the first period.
The Bears picked up one first down, but punted and DHS scored again at 3:38 on a 19-yard sprint out by T.J Yeldon to make it 10-0.
The Trojans extended the lead to 17 on drive four when Yeldon ran it in from the RHS 18 at 5: 19 in the second quarter and made 20-0 with 3.7 seconds to go in the half when Roberts booted another 30 yarder.
Yeldon scored his third touchdown of the night for DHS with 3:30 left in the third on a run up the middle from the wildcat formation.
Yeldon finished with 159 yards on 24 carries. DHS quarterback Sam Gresham threw for 99 yards on eight -of-nine passes.
RHS tailback Tolbert carried 19 times for 87 yards and quarterback caleb Sumrall was 2-of-9 for 56 yards.
RHS will host Escambia County Friday while Daphne will travel to face Niceville, Fla., next week.
