DAPHNE, Alabama — With their sights firmly set on a 5-0 start in 6A Area 3 play the Daphne Trojans scored early and often in a 73-47 win over the visiting Robertsdale Golden Bears.

In front of a packed house that featured a fair share of both the home crowd Trojans and the visiting fans of Robertsdale the Trojans took another step toward an Area 3 championship.

With the combination that featured both sharp shooting from behind the arc and dazzling moves at the rim there is no wonder the fans packed the house waiting to see what was going to happen next.

In the end the visiting Bears were no match for the speed and athleticism of the Trojans.

With the win the Trojans seem to be picking up speed as the season progresses they now have won four out of their last five games giving them a comfortable lead in the Area 3 standings.

“We have been getting better and better. Hopefully we can keep this momentum going down the stretch,” Trojan head coach Cedric Yelding said. “Most of the rest of our games are area games so it’s very important.

On the night the Trojans had four players score in double figures including double-double machines junior forwards Devonte Young and Bradley Nero. They both along with Chris Sain put up a team high in points with 14.

“Both of those kids pretty much every night puts up close to a double-double,” Yelding said. “You can pretty much bank on them to get rebounds and to give us energy.”

Senior guard Donovan Dale was the fourth player in double figures with 10 points.

The game started quickly for the Trojans who scored their first four points off Bear turnovers that led to easy transition layups prompting the Bears to call a timeout in first minute of the contest.

The Trojans would turn that quick burst into a 9-0 run to start the ball game. Not to be out done the Bears would answer with a 10-0 run of their own to take the lead that would last for much of the opening quarter.

The Trojans welcomed the second quarter with another run giving them the lead that they would not relinquish for the duration of the game.

Daphne took an eight point lead into the locker room at half time.

The second half wound up being all Daphne as they led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter. A lead that would stretch higher as the game neared its end.

The Trojans closed the door in the fourth quarter by outscoring the bears 15-2 to secure the win for the Trojans.

Overall the Bears were outscored in the second half 33-15.

There was a bright spot for the bears however, junior guard Rashad Hobby finished with a game high 16 points that included four baskets from behind the arc.

The Trojans improved their record Friday night to 11-7 overall and 5-0 in region play.

With the loss the Bears fall to an overall record 9-13 and 1-2 in the region.

The Trojans will be in action again Tuesday when they host LeFlore. The Bears will travel to Fairhope to take on the Pirates.

Lady Trojans beat Lady Bears: The Lady Trojans set the tone for the night with a nail biting victory over the visiting Robertsdale bears 38-36. The Bears last shot attempt bounced off the rim giving the Trojans the win. The Trojans were led in scoring by senior guard Kristen Henton with 12 points. Junior Teira Green and senior Cherese Hunter both finished with nine. Golden Bears Junior guard Austin Richardson finished with a game high 17 points.
