DAPHNE, Alabama - There was no shortage of emotion in the final game of the first day of the Southern Shootout Soccer Tournament. Daphne and Murphy played to a 2-2 draw that saw two players at the center of attention.
Moses Muhubao and Levi Ehmka both tallied both goals for the teams that led to the 2-2 tie. The tie moves the Trojans record to 1-0-1 in the tournament leading into play on Saturday. The Trojans defeated Auburn earlier on Friday afternoon.
“They (Murphy) play hard it’s always a good competition against them. We knew it was going to be a physical game. It’s hard for every team to play in back-to-back games,” Trojan head coach Rick Andrew said. “Auburn was an emotional win for us and our guys came out a little flat. Murphy did a great job and took advantage of their opportunities. It was a well fought game."
The two teams played a rough first half that saw both teams feel each other out early. It wasn’t until the 31:00 minute mark of the first half that Ehmka was able to break free and score the game’s first goal.
Muhubao and Murphy answered quickly three minutes later when he was able to split the defense and score the game tying goal with exactly one minute remaining in the opening half.
After half time, Daphne came out with a little more sense of urgency and played better soccer that eventually led to their second goal of the game scored again by Ehmka.
Not to be out done Muhubao again answered the call and scored a little more than ten minutes remaining in the contest.
Both teams had their chances to break the tie late in the second half but that never came to fruition as both teams defense played well enough to preserve the tie.
With the tie Murphy’s record moved to 0-0-2 in the tournament.
“I am happy, we haven’t played a game until tonight and we played two. We have a lot to work to do and I am excited. I saw a lot of character and we had some things to build on,” Murphy head coach Ryan Little said. “We need to do a little better keeping our shape. We need to work on keeping our Wings back and work on that outside third."
On Saturday Daphne was scheduled to match up against Briarwood Christian while Murphy was scheduled to match up against Auburn. Both teams vied for a chance to move out of pool play and into the next round.
