Daphne council applies for sidewalks grant

DAPHNE, Ala. — The Daphne City Council on Monday approved the city’s application for the $150,000 “Safe Routes to School” grant, but decided not to approve application for a $400,000 federal grant for the Olde Methodist Church Museum.

The money provided by the “Safe Routes to School” grant would not come from the city, but engineering costs of around $20,000 would be the city’s responsibility. The project builds sidewalks from Lawson Road to Daphne Middle School on County Road 13 and Whispering Pines Road.

The “Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collection” grant, which would upgrade preservation of items in the museum, would require the city to match up to the amount of money taken in, with a maximum of $800,000 for the museum. Council members decided to hold off on the business item until a work session to receive more information.

“I just want the museum to come back with some sort of budget and describe how they are going to spend the funds,” council member Cathy Barnette said.

“I am meeting with (museum committee head) Mickey Boykin later this week,” said David Cohen, Daphne’s city clerk.

In other news, the council:
