DAPHNE, Ala. — The Daphne City Council voted Monday to fill positions for a Civic Center events assistant, a patrol officer and a school crossing guard.
The council approved the Civic Center’s events assistant position by a 5-1 vote. Council members Cathy Barnette, John Lake, Ron Scott, August Palumbo and Kelly Reese voted in favor of the motion while Councilman Derek Boulware voted against it. Councilman Bailey Yelding was absent.
The position pays $10.05 an hour and an annual salary of around $20,906.
Boulware said even though the events assistant position was budgeted, that is not the point of a hiring freeze, particularly when the city aims to save around $300,000.
“I’m not in favor of filling the Civic Center position due to the fact that our own budget was set with the element of a hiring freeze so the city didn’t have to pull from reserves,” he said.
