Daphne dominates in Golden Bear den for area victory

ROBERTSDALE, Ala.— Daphne’s senior power-forward duo of Bradley Nero and Devonte Young each posted their fourth-consecutive double-double and helped the Trojans to a 65-40 division win at Robertsdale Friday.

Nero scored 15 points and Young added 14 as the DHS boys improved to 11-8 overall and remained unbeaten (3-0) in Class 6A’s Area 3. The road win was the Trojans’ fifth in a row after sweeping the Baldwin County Bay Area Roundball Classic last week. The Golden Bears fell to 6-16 and 1-2 coming off an important 62-57 Area 3 win over Foley on Wednesday.

“Bradley and Devonte— both — they are my energy guys,” said Daphne head coach Cedric Yielding. “They come out and they rebound well. They give us so many second chances—if not put backs—and they have been hitting double figures in both points and rebounds lately. This was their fourth double-double. They work well together and they inspire the younger guys, too. I have a lot of other seniors this year, too, and they are all comfortable and cooperate well out there night after night.

“Tonight, everybody got to play and got some serious minutes and got to contribute (12 of 14 DHS players scored). That’s always good, especially in a tough environment on the road. Robertsdale is always tough and they never quit. That’s what’s good about having so many experienced (nine seniors) guys.”

Dylan Smith led the Bears with 15 points and Lonnie Dailey supplied eight more. Robertsdale head coach Marshall Davis said his team got off to a slow start but was pleased with the effort his players gave all night.

“We didn't do a good job of rotating on our defensive zones,” he said. “Our kids never quit though, they played hard and competed. The effort is there, but we need to work on executing better and I think our youth was also a factor.

"But this was a good experience for us in that it helps us grow and get better. You have to play good teams to get better. And we have some kids who are not real used to this level and pace so exposure is good for us. But I’m proud of the heart they show and their desire to get better.”

DHS built a double-digit lead early and RHS trailed the Trojans 32-20 at halftime. Yelding added that getting off to quick starts early in the first and third periods is important.

“That’s key for me. I always (emphasize) that’s the most important parts of the game—the first three, four minutes of the first quarter and the first three to four minutes of the third quarter,” he said. “Anytime you go on the road and can get a win in this county is big,” said Yelding, who used to coach at RHS.

“You can throw records out the door whenever these kids play against each other. Proud of the guys tonight. Games like this with everybody getting good minutes pays dividends down the road. I think just believing in ourselves has been the big difference. Everyone on the team understands their role and what they're doing."
