DAPHNE, Alabama—The Trojans scored 12 points in three plays, and 21 points in nine-total plays counting the extra points by Tyler Cook as Daphne went on to defeat Thomasville 35-9 at Daphne's Jubilee Stadium Friday night.

Jonathan McGaster, T.J. Fleeton, Ronnie Davis and Zackery Morgan picked up touchdowns on the ground for DHS.

The Tigers however proved very capable of controlling the clock on offense from their Wing-T formation, maintaining possession almost nine of the first 12 minutes. And while quick-strike scoring plays and long-yardage set-up plays limited the Trojans' offensive snaps from scrimmage early on, that would change in the second and third periods

to Daphne's favor.

McGaster took the opening kickoff about 89 yards for for the first score, Davis broke through the line on the next play from scrimmage at his own 23rd-yard line and was dragged down at the THS one-yard line before taking it in on the next play. He also scored the last

first-quarter TD from the two-yard line to cap a DHS drive of 59 yards. THS kicker Ty White split the uprights just before the half to put the Tigers on the board with a 27-yard field goal.

In the second half Fleeton turned a basic spread pass look at the THS 18  into a subtle quarterback draw up the middle for six points. Tiger offensive/defensive standout and top college prospect Devonte White returned a 92-yard kickoff for the only THS score of the second half.

Daphne senior quarterback Zachery Morgan then took advantage of the spread field and sprinted up the middle on an improvised draw for a 33-yard TD. DHS kicker Dominick Brisolara took care of the PATs in the second half. McGaster had a 77-yard kickoff return recalled and DHS linebacker Peter Jabbia had a scoop and score return from the THS 36 brought back on penalties.

"It was a great night for football," said DHS coach Glenn Vickery. "Kids played hard. Liked the effort. "These games are a lot like dress rehearsals, but a lot more serious. It gives a lot of kids a chance to play under the lights. Gives us a chance to work more on our stuff and see where we need to improve some or a lot. Saw some good things, but saw some mental mistakes, too. So we'll go back and work on things some more and try to straighten out those mental issues and get ready for the next one."

The next one is the first regular season game for DHS and

next-door-neighbor—but never-before-played— inter-class rival Spanish Fort which defeated Muscle Shoals 33-22 Friday night in their preseason game in Montgomery. The DHS at SF game will be played Labor Day Monday at 3 p.m. at Spanish Fort and will air nationally on one of ESPN's channels.

Vickery said the excitement and hype will really take off and maybe some anxiousness with the 10-day separation.

"We're going to try to use the extra time next week to our advantage of course, but I don't know if all the time in the world would be long enough to prepare for Spanish Fort," he said. They are a very good team. But we'll do our best to get ready and work hard to take care of business when the time comes."

Fleeton said the excitement over the Spanish Fort showdown was already buzzing even before the ESPN announcement. "We just want to play them and get out there and settle this thing," he said. "I know a lot of people at Spanish Fort including a lot of the players, some pretty well. I know they want to show us what they can do, but we plan to show them we can play some serious ball, too. I guess we'll all know when the dust all settles. But it is exciting to be part of the first game against them. Been wanting to for a long time. And for us, you know, the seniors, it's big. We won't get another shot."

The University of Louisiana-Lafayette commitment also said the warm up with Thomasville was helpful. "I think we looked pretty good out there as a team offensively and defensively. We made some mistakes that we'll work on, but overall, we looked good. The defense really looked good for us and you know we got some young guys out there, but they didn't miss a beat, especially that first half. Offense. you now we looked great," he said with a big smile. "No really, we were able to move the ball. Line did great job upfront. Got to give them the credit you know. Lonnie ran well, Jonathan made some nice runs. I don't know what happen on the second run back, probably holding, but that's one of those things we have to work on. Last thing we need is a penalty to hurt us in a close game."
