Daphne dominates Tigers for 6A Area 3 win

DAPHNE, Ala. — The Trojans kept finding ways to stay ahead of the visiting Baldwin County High Tigers as Daphne outpaced BCHS 62-32 in Class 6A, Area 3 action Tuesday.

DHS was led by Bradley Nero’s double- double marks of 11 points with 10 rebounds and Justin Thomas who added 11 points. It was Nero’s fifth double-dou- ble in the last six games. Daphne im- proved to 12-9, 4-0. Baldwin County’s Mon- trey Bishop and Jakori Savage each scored eight and Isaiah Dortch

had seven points. “We had everybody

play some good solid minutes and 12 out of 14 guys scored so that helped keep everybody fresh and it spreads out the opportunities to score and rebound,” said Daphne head coach Cedric Yielding. “That’s fine. But Baldwin County never throws in the towel. And I think being blessed with a lot of seniors, like we are— most of these guys know that you never, never let up no matter what the score is. Because if you do a good team will be ready and turn it around. So this was good for us to help show the younger guys and play against a team like Baldwin County that does not lay down. These are the kids we need to be ready to step up next year.”

The young (three seniors) Tigers, down 11-6 after the first eight minutes, stayed within striking distance through the second quarter with a 10-point deficit. BCHS limited Daphne runs early in the third period but eventually fell back to trail 45-26 to start the fourth stanza.

Baldwin County coach Lorenzo Hunter was philosophical about the loss.

“If you’re going to dish it out, then you

better be willing to take it. We’re use to dishing it out but we can take, too. But we made some progress this year and it’s not over. But we have some guys who have to grow up fast. We plan to keep work- ing and my kids are working hard. Right now Daphne is hands down the team to beat in Baldwin County. Coach (Yelding) did a good job. They are a senior-laden team and they know what to do and they are doing it consistently. My hat’s off. We’re young. That’s not an excuse we’re just not ready to match that level now. It takes time, but we’ll get there.”
