DAPHNE, Ala. —Daphne outscored the Alma Bryant Hurricanes 24-0 in the first half and 14-12 in the second. Dominic Brisolara hit a 35-yard field goal for the Region 2 champion Trojans’ on their first possession then made five extra points for a 38-12 win over the ‘Canes who finished as the third seed in Region 1.
"This was a huge win for us," said Daphne coach Glenn Vickery. "Bryant has a good team and they showed how explosive they can be. But credit our defense with limiting the damage. Our defense did a good job of keeping them out of the endzone. For the defense, it was lights out in the first half.”
Senior quarterback Zack Morgan threw two touchdown passes and ran a couple in from three and seven yards out. T.J. Reed caught a Morgan swing pass for a 22-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter and later found Wheylen Tolbert on a 10-yard TD strike just before the half.
“Offensively, I thought we were balanced tonight with the run and the pass,” Vickery said. "Zack got off to a slow start but he recovered well. He made some plays for us tonight."
DHS collected points on back-to-back drives three times to dominate time of possession and capped off their scoring on Brandolin Perdue’s 75-yard kickoff return for the final Trojan touchdown with about nine minutes left in the game.
Morgan said his offensive line and the defense made the win a team effort.
“On pass plays. just have a lot of talented receivers to go to and an offensive line that gives me time to look. But if it’s not working I don’t mind running the ball—I kind of like it.”
He said the contact comes with the position’s territory, but his first football experiences were on the other side of the ball.
“I played defense when I was a kid, mostly linebacker, when I first started out. So I know how much those guys want to put a good lick on me. I think it helps me to kind of know what they’re looking for. But sometimes there’s not much you can do about it. I actually like to get hit early in the game. Kind of gets you in focus.”
The Trojan Defense set up two Daphne scores on fumble recoveries by Lorenzo Fields and an interception by linebacker Myles Pierce. Morgan also spread the love with big-gain passes to Tamaruice Tolbert and C.J. Yelding that also set up scores.
For the Hurricanes (4-6), Dvonte Crandle scored on a 22-yard touchdown run and quarterback Tyler Nealy connected with Joshua Banks on a 3-yard touchdown pass. But point after conversions failed on each ABHS attempt.
Alma Bryant had won it’s last three region games over Theodore, Murphy and Davidson to earn the third post-season slot.
Vickery said the final regular season win was also a momentum preserver after winning their last five in a row and going undefeated in a tough 6A Region 2.
“I was pleased with our overall effort,” He said. “Alma Bryant has a good team and our guys stepped up and played a solid game in week 10 tonight. We've won five straight now. We try to have some momentum going for us. If you don't you won't play much longer when the playoffs start. We're just trying to get better every week and hopefully, we can make a run in the playoffs.""
Daphne (8-2) will host Wetumpka—the fourth seed from Region 4— in the first round of the playoffs next Friday night.
"They have a great team," said Vickery of Wetumpka. "I have not seen a lot of film on them yet. I know that they run the ball really well."
The WHS Indians closed out the regular season with a 42-8 win over 5A Marbury.
