Daphne East students busy reading for Polar Express goals

This has been a BUSY week at Daphne East Elementary! All of the students are trying to meet their reading goals for the Polar Express read-a-thon. The kids are working tirelessly and trying to read every chance they get to meet their goal.

The kids are bringing in their sheets like hot cakes — signed with their minutes read. If the parents are wondering why their kid is having a sudden change of heart about reading, the reason is that if the class meets their goal at the end of week, they get to wear their pajamas and watch the movie “Polar Express” on Friday.

So kids, keep on reading to make your goals so that at the end of the week you can lay back and eat popcorn in your PJ’s!

On Tuesday, Dec.13, the school band and dance group, the Dazzlers,  performed for our school. They played many different Christmas songs and featured sections to play solos. The Daphne East Dazzlers also performed a dance for the entire school. Everyone did a great job!

Also, people from all over Daphne are coming to our school to read to us. I know everyone here is very excited. They will be reading Christmas stories to Daphne East students.

Authors, teachers, news reporters, and even policemen are taking time to come to our school. Some of the readers include Lance Crawford, sports news anchor; Terry Wilhite, Baldwin County Director of Communications; Meredith Foster, Daphne High School principal; Ted Dunagan, author; Coach Glenn Vickery from DHS; Sheila Alberstadt, author; and Rhonda Moss, Daphne Public Library.

We are so excited about the Angle Tree Donations! This is when Daphne East Elementary helps the needy people in the local area. Our school is helping by parent donations of gifts for the needy families.

Thanks to everyone to helped make this year a success. Daphne East definitely has the “Christmas Spirit.”

The first grade is really excited about their upcoming field trip to the post office. They will mail letters to Santa Claus about what they want for Christmas. Then, they will go to City Hall and sing Christmas carols.

Afterwards, they will go to the park and have a pizza party. Fun!

The fourth-graders are also going on a field trip this Wednesday to Oakleigh Mansion in Mobile to learn more about local history. This field trip is set in a 19th century environment so visitors get the experience of living in the 1800s.

The students will see three different classes of life for men and women in the 19th century in Mobile. These different classes of the community are the society, a servant’s life, and the worker’s life. They are going to have an awesome time!
