Daphne East students get fire-safety tutorial

DAPHNE, Ala.—A Daphne Fire Department representative visited Daphne East Elementary School Wednesday to teach kids about what to do if there is a fire in their home or if their clothes become enflamed.

“If your clothes catch on fire, stop, drop and roll,” said Tommy Bertagnolli, the department’s public-safety life educator. “Crawl out from under smoke. Have a meeting place outside your house. These rules I’ve been teaching for about 35 years.”

Bertagnolli also warned kids against using matches or lighters.

“Little children don’t play with matches and lighters,” he said. “You can start a fire you can’t put out.”

Destiny Locke’s class watched a video on fire safety and then practiced escaping a trailer with simulated smoke hovering in the air. The kids crawled to the back entrance and met together outside.

“To crawl in the smoke,” Parker Lomax, 5, said was the day’s take-away lesson.

“To stop, drop and roll,” Jaden Causey, 5, said was what he learned.

Mariah Mack, 5, said she will tell her parents “when the (smoke) detector comes on, you get out the back door or the window.”

Bertagnolli gave presentations Tuesday through today at Daphne East Elementary School, and he plans to visit Daphne Elementary School every day next week.

The Daphne Fire Department is celebrating Fire Safety Month in October and is visiting the city’s schools to teach kids about the dangers of fire and what to do when emergency strikes.
