Daphne, Fairhope set for nationally televised game

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Just when it seemed the Jubilee Cup or War on the Shore game between Daphne and Fairhope couldn’t get any bigger, along comes a Southeast Regional broadcast of it Thursday night from Fairhope Municipal Stadium’s Majors Field.

The televised rivalry, sponsored by C Spire Wireless, will be available to more than 20 million viewers on FOX Sports South, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

The Daphne Trojans will bring their Class 6A No. 1 ranking and 7-0 record to face the 6-1 Pirates for Eastern Shore bragging rights, but the real battle will be for ranking in the 6A Region 2 standings. Daphne is 5-0 and Fairhope is 4-1.

Trojans head coach Glenn Vickery said his team never has trouble getting up for this “Next Door Neighbor” competition, the key he said is staying up for a full 48 minutes.

“We have to play four quarters of sound football to have a chance against Fairhope,” he said. “They are good. We have tons of respect for them. Chase Domino is the real deal. He is a winner at QB. They have great skill people and Tanner Martin is a great running back. Their O line is good again. Kyron Samuels and the rest are big and fast.”

Pirate players coming off a huge win at Foley, which was televised locally, say they are excited about facing the defending state champions toe-to-toe.

“Absolutely. Let’s go, baby,” said Fairhope offensive lineman Kyron Samuels. “Now we can get ready. It’s time for the big one. That’s the one we want.”

Fairhope head coach David Faulkner said after the win at Foley, enthusiasm aside, his team will have to minimize mistakes.

“I don’t think Daphne and Fairhope will ever have trouble getting up for each other. We just have to avoid hurting ourselves like we do sometimes and get as ready as we can with a short week. It’s going to be a big one, for sure,” he said.

High powered offenses square off for Jubilee Cup:

When the Daphne Trojans and Fairhope Pirates square off on Thursday on national television, they will show off two high-powered offenses that are averaging 41 (Daphne) and 43.6 (Fairhope) points per game.

Daphne’s offense is led by senior running back T.J. Yeldon, an Auburn commitment. Yeldon has rushed for more than 1,100 yards and 18 rushing touchdowns through seven games.

The Pirates are led by dual threat senior quarterback Chase Domino. Domino had more than 350 total yards and three touchdowns in a rivalry win over Foley on Friday. Running back Tanner Martin is also tough to stop, gaining more than 190 yards and three scores against Foley.

On defense, the Pirates give up an average of 20 points per game, while Daphne gives up just 10.9 per game.

Daphne is 19-3 overall against Fairhope, including a 28-14 win last season.
